Hi there! Welcome to another issue of The Food Ninja Monthly.

TL;DR

In this month’s issue, we’ll be talking about feature insights into our records page and tips & introductions to the advanced features there, and some tips on reducing food waste through implementing the FIFO system. We’ll also be showcasing some metrics from our app. And, a new project we’ve been working on!

Food Ninja App Tips

Introducing the Records Tab — Advanced

Faster Record Creations

Want to avoid the hassle of manually typing out record information every time you come home from the grocery store? Use our AI features here! There are two options — smart creations with either camera of voice. If you choose the camera option, a camera will pop up. Point your camera to the item you want to record, preferably with its expiration label, and we will automatically fill in necessary details for you! For the voice option, simply speak into your microphone and we will analyze which items to create.

QR Code Sharing

You can share your records with anyone easily! Simply export a record’s QR code by clicking the QR code icon beside a record’s save button. You can either open the given image or print it out. Then, by using the option to scan a QR code (accessed from the ellipsis-in-a-circle button besides the record creation button) and we’ll create the record for you.

Metrics & Recaps From Our App

July Recap

Bugs We’ve Fixed

  • Fixed numerous crashes

  • Fixed numerous localizations

  • Fixed subscription tree-planting fails

New Features We’ve Added

  • We added more Tips to the app for feature explanation and guides

Records We’ve Tracked

We have helped track 27 new records in June!!!

And we have helped users track these records and 22 were successfully used up and saved from waste! 😃

Trees We’ve Planted

We've planted 2 trees in July! That makes a total of 10 mangroves we’ve planted in Kilifi, Kenya in partnership with TheGoodAPI!

With 2 tree, 2 square meter of trees are restored, 0.004 workdays are created, 0.62 metric tonnes of carbon dioxide are absorbed (throughout its lifetime), and 0.06 cars removed from the road per year! These numbers may seem small, but the more trees we aim to plant and will plant, the less the environment will suffer!

Our current metrics in total:

  • 10 square meters of trees restored

  • 0.02 workdays created

  • 3.1 tonnes of CO2 absorbed

  • 0.67 cars removed from the road per year

New Project Sneak Peek

We’ve been working on a new product to be introduced into the Food Ninja ecosystem not long after August, probably even during August or at most September. It will be a multi-platform application for a POS machine, made for Taiwan-region businesses, works anywhere in the world. It works on iOS, macOS, the web, and Android. Unfortunately, Windows and Linux support will not be available. After this product is introduced, we’ll be working on the Android version of the Food Ninja app.

Waste Reduction Tips

The “FIFO” System

The FIFO (First In, First Out) system is a professional inventory management technique adapted for home kitchens to ensure you consume food while it is at its peak quality.

How to implement FIFO

  • A "Use Me First” Zone Dedicate a specific bin (preferably clear), or shelf, in your fridge for items that need to be used within 1 to 2 days. This prevents “fridge amnesia” where items get pushed to the back and forgotten.

  • Labeling Use a simple piece of masking tape or a dry-erase marker on glass containers to note the date you opened or cooked an item.

  • The “U” Shape Strategy When stocking pantry shelves, place new items in a “U” shape around the older items, or simply shift the older items to the front every time you put away groceries.

  • Visual Audits Spend 5 minutes before your weekly grocery shop scanning the back of your shelves. If you find something nearing it slimit, make it the centerpiece of your next meal.

Explanation

  • Reduces Spoilage You stop buying duplicates of items you already have.

  • Saves Money You stop throwing away “science experiments” that have been hiding in the back of the fridge for weeks.

  • Improves Meal Planning By knowing exactly what needs to be used, your meal planning becomes reactive and efficient rather than forced.

That’s it!

That is it for this August’s issue. See you in September! If you have any questions or suggestions, email us at [email protected]!
